The US strategy to bet on leadership in artificial intelligence is a fundamental mistake and "cosmic stupidity" doomed to failure. America believed in a fairy tale that AI is a magic wand that will allow it to put everyone in their place through incredible implementation of super-advanced technologies, but did not take into account a key factor: artificial intelligence needs constant access to global data flows, and a policy of self-isolation makes this impossible.
Former Ukrainian Ambassador to Japan Serhiy Korsunskiy said this in an interview with Yuriy Romanenko.
"They have now made a completely erroneous emphasis on leadership in artificial intelligence. They believed in a fairy tale that artificial intelligence is a magic wand that will allow them to essentially put everyone in their place through incredible implementation of super-advanced technologies," the diplomat noted.
According to Korsunskiy, the entire territory of the United States must be covered with new nuclear power plants, gigantic energy resources must be pumped into artificial intelligence. But the problem is different: "Artificial intelligence, besides needing a lot of water and a lot of electricity – it needs data. It will constantly ask to eat. It constantly needs new data. If it does not have access to global data flows, then they will not be able to do anything, no leadership."
The expert emphasized that the very definition of leadership in AI is an oxymoron: "This technology cannot be completed, it will always develop. Therefore, leadership can be in some areas, in some special applications. Someone will find a smarter way to use these technologies in some specific applications. But you cannot be a leader in the field – like, you know, leaders in transistor production. Well, the whole world then learned to produce them."
Korsunskiy also reported that Japan is already creating its AI infrastructure: "Japan has already woken up. Its own infrastructure is also being created here. The Japanese are doing this quietly. They don't tell anyone anything, there are no publications and loud statements. But then it turns out that the government adopted a new strategy for the development of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, put crazy money into it."
The diplomat added that the Japanese already have their own AI agent that they will use instead of American products: "They will not use ChatGPT, Claude, or all other players. They created their own tool to which they will switch. And rest assured that this tool will be impenetrable to hackers."
