The United States has privately informed Europe that in 2027 it will withdraw conventional armed forces from Europe, leaving only a nuclear umbrella.

Former Ukrainian Ambassador to Japan Serhiy Korsunskiy said this in an interview with Yuriy Romanenko.

Withdrawal of troops from Europe effectively means withdrawal from Germany, where the main American military bases are located. This decision is part of the new US national security strategy under the Trump administration, which envisages a radical reduction in American military presence abroad.

"The US told Europe that it should prepare – as far as was reported in various credible sources – they quietly told Europe to prepare, in 2027 we are withdrawing conventional armed American units from Europe. Withdrawing from Europe means withdrawing from Germany," the diplomat reported.

According to Korsunskiy, the US nuclear umbrella seems to remain, but conventional armed forces units are being withdrawn. "The same discussion is going on in Asia: where and what contingent should be. At a certain stage last year it was said that the contingent in Korea needs to be reduced," he added.

The expert noted that the US role in NATO today boils down to the formula "give 5% of GDP and defend yourselves." "We are no longer going to impose anything on anyone. We have our national interests, and we want you, everyone else, to clearly understand that we will achieve them essentially unilaterally," Korsunskiy explained the position of the American administration.

The diplomat emphasized that this forces Germany and Japan to radically reconsider their security strategies. "Germany in Europe and Japan in Asia are precisely the two countries for which relations with the States were the central axis of their security. Accordingly, there is no trust in them now," Korsunskiy summarized.
