Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned citizens of the threat of massive Russian strikes during the Christmas holidays. The head of state urged Ukrainians to be particularly attentive to air raid sirens in the coming days, specifically on December 23, 24, and 25.
Zelensky made these remarks during an exchange with journalists.
He emphasized that international partners, including representatives from Germany and the United States, sought to organize a so-called "Christmas truce." This was intended to serve as a diplomatic signal of the parties' readiness for dialogue. However, Russia publicly rejected the possibility.
According to the President, the Kremlin's categorical refusal is a poor sign, indicating the aggressor's intent to continue its intimidation tactics.
"The problem is that when Russia says 'there will be no Christmas truce,' I believe that, in principle... they are doubling down on such intimidation," Zelensky noted.
The head of state observed that Russian forces often resort to attacks on significant dates, so the risk of strikes on Christmas remains high.
"We understand that during these specific days—well, it’s in their nature on Christmas—they might launch some kind of massive strike. People should pay close attention during these days because these 'comrades' may carry out such attacks. They hold nothing sacred," the President stressed.
In light of these threats, Zelensky has ordered intelligence efforts to be maximized to clearly understand the enemy's plans. Additionally, a meeting of the Staff of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief was held, where the primary focus was the air defense of cities, villages, and communities.
The President acknowledged a shortage of air defense systems but assured that work to strengthen the aerial shield is ongoing. Specifically, Ukraine is working on a major contract with the United States.
"We will be strengthening a major contract we are working on regarding dozens—yes, a couple of dozen—Patriot systems with the Americans, purchasing them through various programs. We are working on all of this. I am confident there will be a result," Zelensky concluded.
