Overnight on January 24, Russia launched a massive combined strike on Ukraine, deploying 375 attack drones and 21 missiles of various types. The assault primarily targeted energy infrastructure in Kyiv and the surrounding region.
This was reported by "Hvylya", citing operational data.
According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, radar units tracked 396 aerial targets. These included two 3M22 "Zircon" hypersonic cruise missiles, 12 Kh-22/Kh-32 cruise missiles, six "Iskander-M/S-300" ballistic missiles, and one Kh-59/69 guided air-launched missile. Of the 375 launched UAVs (including "Shahed," "Gerbera," and "Italmas" types), air defense forces successfully intercepted or neutralized 357 units. Fifteen missiles were also shot down.
In the capital, a 48-year-old woman was killed in the Holosiivskyi district as a result of the shelling. At least four civilians were injured: three were hospitalized, and one received medical treatment at the scene.
Damage and destruction were recorded in five districts of the capital: Darnytskyi, Dniprovskyi, Desnianskyi, Holosiivskyi, and Solomianskyi.
According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko:
- In Desnianskyi district: debris fell on a non-residential building;
- In Dniprovskyi district: a fire broke out in a garage cooperative, a fuel tanker caught fire in a parking lot, and windows were shattered in an apartment block;
- In Darnytskyi district: windows were damaged in a private medical facility;
- In Holosiivskyi district: a fire occurred on the territory of a non-residential building, and windows were shattered in a private house;
- In Solomianskyi district: a six-story office building was destroyed.
"Six residential buildings, a confectionery factory building, premises of the Vernadsky National Library, an impound lot, warehouses, and automobiles were damaged," the Prosecutor's Office noted.
Humanitarian Situation
Nearly 6,000 apartment buildings have been left without heating. Most of these had already been reconnected to the heat supply twice following shelling on January 9 and 20. Water supply issues have arisen on the Left Bank and partially on the Right Bank.
Due to power shortages, the metro is operating with restrictions. Trains on the "Red" line are running in shuttle mode with transfers, and four stations are closed. The "Green" line is also operating with transfers due to damage to the fencing on an open section of the track.
On the "Red" line, trains are running between stations: "Akademmistechko" – "Arsenalna" (intervals of 7-9 minutes); "Darnytsia" – "Livoberezhna" – "Arsenalna" (intervals of 12 minutes). The stations "Lisova," "Chernihivska," "Hydropark," and "Dnipro" are closed. Additionally, the "Green" line is operating with transfers. Due to damage discovered on the fencing of an open section, trains are running between "Syrets" – "Vydubychi" and "Osokorky" – "Chervonyi Khutir."
Power Outages
On the morning of January 24, Ukraine's energy system entered a critical state following the massive overnight Russian strike. The primary blow targeted generation facilities and distribution networks, leading to large-scale blackouts in a number of regions.
The situation is most severe in the Kyiv region. Emergency shutdown schedules have been introduced in Kyiv and the surrounding oblast. Energy officials state that a return to scheduled hourly restrictions will only be possible once the system stabilizes. Currently, distribution network operators are forced to apply additional grid restrictions to prevent equipment overload.
Beyond the capital, serious power disruptions are being observed in the Chernihiv and Kharkiv regions. Grid restrictions also remain in effect in Odesa. In most other regions of Ukraine, standard hourly schedules are being applied for the population, while power limitation schedules have been introduced for business and industry.
"The main reason for the forced shutdowns is the aftermath of the massive attack on Ukrainian power plants and transmission and distribution substations last night," the agency emphasized.
The situation in border areas remains consistently difficult. Due to ceaseless hostilities, restoration work there is extremely hampered, leaving consumers without electricity for the long term. At present, the Ukrainian energy sector is functioning in emergency mode to coordinate the actions of all relevant services.
Zelensky's Reaction
The President of Ukraine confirmed that Kyiv and the surrounding region, as well as the Sumy, Kharkiv, and Chernihiv regions, came under attack. In Kharkiv, a maternity hospital, a shelter for displaced persons, a medical college, and residential buildings were damaged. Dozens of casualties have been reported so far, including a child.
Zelensky emphasized that every Russian attack on energy targets proves the impossibility of delaying air defense supplies. He expressed hope for the implementation of all agreements regarding air defense reached with President Trump in Davos.
We previously wrote that Russia will be offered an "energy truce."
