The Syzran oil refinery has suspended crude oil processing following a Ukrainian attack.
According to Hvylya, Reuters reports this, citing two industry sources.
On December 5, 2025, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) launched a strike on the oil refinery in the Russian city of Syzran. According to the AFU General Staff, one of the facility's key units was successfully hit. Sources told the agency that the drones damaged the ELOU-AVT-6 primary crude oil processing unit.
This unit plays a critically important role in the functioning of the entire refinery, as it is where primary oil products are obtained for subsequent deep processing. Therefore, putting it out of action paralyzes the entire technological production chain.
It is worth noting that the ELOU-AVT-6 unit was previously struck by drones on the night of August 30 this year. Restoration work at that time lasted about two weeks. One of the agency's sources said that this time, repairs could take approximately a month.
According to industry experts, the Syzran refinery processed approximately 4.3 million metric tons of crude oil in 2024, which is significantly below its design capacity of 7 million tons.
Bloomberg reports that in November alone, the Ukrainian military conducted at least 14 drone attacks on Russian oil refineries—a record number for a single month since the start of the full-scale invasion. In early December, in addition to the Syzran refinery, the AFU also attacked the oil refinery in Ryazan.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects that the rate of crude oil processing at Russian refineries will remain depressed until at least mid-2026 due to the Ukrainian strikes.
"We previously assumed a normalization of refining activity by the end of the year, but we now adhere to a more cautious forecast," the agency stated.
According to IEA data, constant attacks have reduced crude oil processing in Russia by about 500,000 barrels per day.
