The US Supreme Court ruled on Friday that President Donald Trump violated federal law by unilaterally imposing sweeping tariffs worldwide. This marks a significant setback for the White House on an issue central to the President's foreign policy and economic agenda.
As reported by "Hvylya", citing CNN.
The ruling represents arguably the most significant defeat for Trump's second administration before the conservative-majority Supreme Court. The court had previously sided with the President in a series of emergency rulings regarding immigration, the dismissal of independent agency heads, and substantial cuts to government spending.
Chief Justice John Roberts authored the majority opinion. The justices agreed in a 6-3 vote that the tariffs exceeded legal limits.
"The President asserts extraordinary power to unilaterally impose tariffs of unlimited amount, duration, and scope," Roberts wrote on behalf of the Court. "Given the breadth, history, and constitutional context of these claimed powers, he must point to clear Congressional authorization to exercise them."
The Court concluded that the emergency powers Trump attempted to invoke were insufficient to justify such actions.
