U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a major agreement with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding both energy security and trade relations.
The American leader announced the development on his Truth Social platform.
According to Trump, the two sides discussed ending the war in Ukraine during a phone call. A key component of the agreement involves India moving away from Russian energy sources.
"He has agreed to stop buying Russian oil and to buy much more from the USA, and possibly Venezuela. This will help end the war in Ukraine that is going on right now, with thousands of people being killed each week," Trump emphasized.
At the same time, the leaders agreed on new terms for economic cooperation. As a gesture of "friendship and respect," Washington is immediately cutting reciprocal tariffs for India from 25% to 18%. In return, New Delhi has pledged to completely eliminate its duties and non-tariff barriers on American goods, bringing them down to zero.
Trump also announced that India would commit to purchasing U.S. goods under a "Buy American" policy.
"The Prime Minister has also pledged to 'Buy American' at a much higher level, in addition to over $500 billion for energy, technology, agriculture, coal, and many other U.S. products," the President stressed.
He called Modi one of his best friends, noting that the two of them are people who "get things done."
